General Objectives

1. To establish a computer resource centre with at least four computers for patients at the Drug Detoxification, Assessment and Rehabilitation Unit of the University Hospital of the West Indies, Mona, by September 2002.

2. To get all the patients in each cohort literate by the end of their rehab programme. *(Weekly tests will be done to monitor each patient's progress. Special attention will be given to those noticeably lagging behind.)

3. To establish a link with Furdie's House, so that when patients leave the Detox Unit, they can further their computer skills at this outpatient community facility.

4. To inform patients about their increased risks of contracting blood borne sexually transmitted diseases.

5. To obtain the interactive computer software programme, which teaches drug awareness.

6. To teach vital computer skills to all patients, as a means of equipping them for jobs in the society.

*(Computer skills tests will be given at the end of each week to see how much the patients have learnt.)

7. To develop a long-term sustainable development project, which will inculcate positive attitudes towards healthy living in all patients, through the use of efficient communication tools, such as the computer, Detox Unit magazine, and mass media.

8. To make all members of the secondary audience (prospective sponsors) aware of the purpose of the computer resource centre, hence providing the rationale for the donation of funds and/or equipment.

*(Individual letters will be sent to each prospective sponsor. Follow-up calls and

faxes will be done, to be sure that the respective individuals have been reached.)

9. To use mass media methods to educate at least 70 percent of the public about the purpose and activities of the Drug Detoxification, Assessment & Rehabilitation Unit.

10. To raise a minimum of eight hundred and forty thousand dollars in cash or kind, in order to efficiently execute Operation Rebirth.

Informational Objectives

1. To inform all prospective donors (target audience) of the work and achievements of the Drug Detoxification, Assessment & Rehabilitation Unit.

2. To outline the contribution that the researcher intends to make, through further development of the Unit, using letters, mass media and meetings.

3. To increase awareness (by more than 60 %) among the general public about the contributions of non-governmental organizations such as the Drug Detoxification, Assessment & Rehabilitation Unit, through mass media.

*(First of all, baseline data on the public's knowledge of drug assistance programmes will be collected from a random sample of the general public through the use of questionnaires, prior to the mass media ads. Questionnaires will again be issued to a random sample of the general public after the mass media ads have been published. These two sets of data will then be analysed to see if the objective was met.)

5. To find out if drug addicts or their friends and relatives actually know about the Detox Unit.
