Operation Rebirth is a communication-support development project that has been designed to educate, motivate and uplift drug rehab patients at the Detox Unit, University Hospital of the West Indies, Mona. This will be done through the introduction of a computer-learning centre and a literacy support programme, with a strong mass media support.
Operation Rebirth is a broad-based collaborative effort between the Detox Unit, Ministry of Health, National Council on Drug Abuse, HOPIFAM and CARIMAC. These organizations will see to it that Operation Rebirth is maintained over a long-term basis. One representative from each of the five organizations make up the steering committee for Operation Rebirth. This committee is headed by Keron Morris, the project coordinator.
The primary audience for the project is the patients at the Detox Unit. The secondary audience is the prospective sponsors. The tertiary audience is the general public. Mass media will be used to increase the public's awareness of the Detox Unit and drug abuse in general.
The budget for Operation Rebirth is eight hundred and thirty six thousand seven hundred and eighty three dollars (J$836,783.00). Operation Rebirth will obtain funding from sponsors, and it will earn income from the staging of two gospel concerts, one of which will be an annual event that will help to sustain the project in the future.Operation Rebirth is the brainchild of Mr. Keron Morris, a final year Multimedia student at the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication, UWI, Mona. Mr. Morris is coordinating Operation Rebirth in order to fulfil the coursework requirement for his degree in Media and Communication.
